iCloud Drive is failing to sync file contents inside folders unless the folder is opened in Files

On iOS and iPadOS, something is causing iCloud Drive to fail to sync file contents unless the folder the file is contained within is opened in Files.

This is a critical problem as it means I need to remember which files I’ve modified on one machine in order to visit all of those files’ folders on any iOS devices to get synced up.

The failure to sync contents persists even beyond reboots.

Triggering a “Download Now” on any parent folder in Files gets the files to load.

In Shortcuts, running the “Get contents of folder” action on a parent folder also triggers a sync. I’m not sure yet if the action’s Recursive toggle needs to be on.

For now that will have to be my workaround: I need to remember to manually invoke download now on iCloud Drive folders with contents I’m working on whenever I switch to a new iOS device. Or I can run an automation via Shortcuts to recursively get the contents of the folders I’m working on.
